Homemade chili sauce recipeIf you’re hosting a mixed bunch of people, some who want bland and others who like their food hot, you can offer this sauce to spice things up a bit for all the chili-fans!

All you need to do is to fry an onion, some garlic and the right amount of chili to fit your spice-level-tolerance, along with a little salt. Add chopped fresh tomatoes and cook over a high heat to reduce and thicken the sauce.

When you taste it to check the seasoning, you can also add a little gluten free soy sauce if needed. Serve with vegetarian stuffed peppers, stir fried vegetables or gluten free vegetable noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, squeezed
  • 1 chili finely chopped - add as much or as little chili as you like; but make sure the sauce has a kick to it.
  • 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
  • Olive oil
  • Optional gluten free soy sauce
  • Salt for seasoning

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and add the squeezed garlic, followed by the chili.
  2. Stir for a moment while the garlic releases its aroma and then add the finely chopped onion and the seasoning.
  3. Fry the onion for a few minutes and then cover the pan with a lid and let it stew in its own steam.
  4. When the onion is soft and totally cooked through, add the finely chopped tomatoes. Stir, cover and cook on a high heat.
  5. Check the sauce and when the tomatoes are properly cooked and have lost their shape, take off the lid and reduce the sauce until it reaches the right consistency.
  6. Blend the chili sauce & taste to check spice level and seasoning. If you like, at this point you can add a little dash of gluten free soy sauce.
  7. Transfer to a jug and serve alongside a meal to spice it up.
